JS Vig Helps Wayne County Community College Bring a Performing Arts Theater and Expansion
JS Vig is involved in a project for Wayne County Community College’s downriver campus located in Taylor that will benefit not only the college, but the entire downriver community.
JS Vig broke ground last fall for WCCC’s Educational and Performance Arts Theater, which will serve as a theater and multi-purpose auditorium. The project includes 850 theater seats, a full-size workshop for building sets, dressing rooms, eight large seminar rooms, six classrooms and a student lounge area.

“It does have all the capabilities for performing arts,” says Anthony Arminiak, campus president. “We are also going to be using it for different things like conferences.”
WCCC will be adding an associate’s degree program in performing arts in conjunction with the theater’s opening. The college already has a fine arts program which will also benefit from the theater’s gallery.

“The theater is important to the college, and is a boon to the entire community,” says Dan Hall, project manager.

Arminiak says with WCCC’s Northwest campus moving to old U-D Mercy campus, the college has lost the use of that auditorium. “This will provide us to have an auditorium for the entire district and we can also use it for our district events as well.”

The auditorium is also important to the city of Taylor. “The entire K-12 school system doesn’t have an auditorium,” says Arminiak. “It will be available for community use.”
The college strives to convey community spirit in the design of the facility. “A lot of the inspiration for the design came from the (college’s) wish to create a welcoming image to the community,” says Robert Wertenberger, architect.

One of the design aspects is the project’s new entrance. “The building has several entrances, none of which say this is the main entrance so we are providing a new entrance visible from the parking lot so visitors can read where to come into the building,” says Wertenberger.

“The theater has a large fly space for the theater aspects,” says Wertenberger. “Coming down from that are two rather large masonry walls that form what appears to welcoming arms to the community.”

A lot of glass features are also incorporated into the design. “Again, the sense of openness to the community and hopefully they will be able to see the activity and movement behind the glass as you approach the campus.”

JS Vig worked with WCCC in the past to build its public safety training center. “I was so pleased that JS Vig was awarded the contract,” says Arminiak. “I’m a JS Vig fan. It’s been a pleasure working with them.”

The Educational and Performance Arts Theater is scheduled to be completed for the fall school year.
