JS Vig Gives Hotel New Look
JS Vig is the contractor of choice in the launch of Embassy Suites’ new look in Michigan.

The Hilton Suites on Wickham Road in Romulus is not only undergoing a metamorphosis into its sister hotel brand, Embassy Suites, but its design will premier the new look of all Embassy Suites.

"Embassy Suites is viewed as little more upscale,” says the hotel’s representative, Geoff Thompson, on the decision to renovate the property. “We feel the Embassy Suites brand is more marketable to both business people and families alike.”

Thompson says the eclectic, industrial loft-type of design of the new Romulus hotel is based on Embassy Suites new prototype.

“It will be one of the first Embassy Suites in the nation built and designed this way, “says Thompson. “This is what Embassy Suites is going forward with.”

The project includes a complete renovation of the existing suites and facilities as well as the 2500 square foot addition of a main lobby and food service area.

“The Embassy Suites brand as part of its image has a three-story atrium,” says Danny Bounds, architect. “We actually built a new atrium on the site of the existing hotel to capture that feel.”

The atrium will house the main lobby, with exposed beams, lots of indirect lighting, a curved ceiling and a water feature as well as the banquet area. “This atrium is going to be the first thing that strikes guests as they walk in,” says Bounds. “You walk into this high-volume space that’s a lot of glass and exposed trusses and curved ceiling. We think it’s pretty impressive.”

Dennis Levko, project manager, says the materials used throughout the project are also impressive. “The main lobby will feature teak wood panels along the two-story high radius ceiling deck. There is supplementary teak paneling and some cherry wood in the food service area, radius wood flooring and an abundance of porcelain tile. There is gold leaf glass, an indoor water feature and a lot of decorative art work. It has very high-end finishes. ”

The addition also includes expanded administrative offices, an improved business center and minor renovation work to the indoor pool and kitchen.

Besides the construction of the addition, the project includes the renovation of the fitness center, offices, reception and dining areas, as well as all 150 suites.

“The old hotel, had just a very standard dining area,” says Levko. “We are adding to the original dining area as well as creating a new lounge area with a fireplace and plasma televisions that will be one feature they didn’t have before. The additional bonus factor will be that it is totally separate from the dining room.

Levko says they added plasma televisions in the dining area as well along with new furniture, frosted glass panels, “high end” finishes and signature art work.

The suites are undergoing major renovations. All will receive new floor coverings, new sinks, bar areas, countertops, wall coverings and paint. The bathtubs will all be repaired or replaced.

Thompson calls the interior design of the rooms “upscale eclectic” with a touch of high-tech since all suites will now have two flat panel televisions.

Considering the newness of the design, the project was not without challenges, says Levko, but the biggest challenge was keeping the hotel open and available to guests.

Bounds agrees. “I’m proud of a couple things, one being that we were able to pull this team together and incorporate a new brand into an existing hotel and we were able to pull it off while keeping the hotel operational the whole time. It was a major undertaking.”

The Embassy Suites renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
