| JS Vig Builds Warehouse for Kuehne &Nagel and Future Tenants |
The sluggish economy may have slowed development in metro Detroit, but JS Vig is in the throes of finishing an industrial building in time for a new tenant to occupy in March. The building—started in August--is a 63,000 square-foot industrial and office building in Metro Airport Center, located west of Metro Airport. Dan Johnson, managing director, Metro Airport Center, says Kuehne & Nagel, a logistical distribution and freight coordinating business, approached him about needed space. “We have done previous projects and transactions with this tenant in other markets and they came to us looking for a new home,” says Johnson. The new tenant will occupy approximately half of the building. The other half is built as a speculative investment. Metro Airport Center complex contains several other building. It is part of a larger company, International Airport Centers, a privately held business which owns industrial complexes near major airports throughout the country. “They are not affiliated with the airport but due to their proximity they do get a lot of businesses that have interactions with the airport,” says Greg Copp, project manager. He also notes that most of the buildings have loading docks and grade-level access doors for trucks. The new building will have a masonry load bearing wall system. Thom Phillips, architect, says the other buildings’ designs were taken into consideration before several designs were presented to Johnson. “We tried to make it similar even though it is about seven feet taller than the buildings in the area.” The height and higher than usual office requirements were designed to meet the new tenants needs. “Other than those elements it was designed to be as energy efficient as possible,” says Phillips. Metro Airport Center is located in Romulus just west of the airport between Goddard and Wayne Roads on Metro Airport Center Drive. |
