 J.S. Vig Construction Co.'s fast-paced completion of the $30 million, 255,000-square-foot, ABN AMRO building near Ann Arbor was an exercise in team work, planning and the application of hard-earned experience, said Vice President Dennis Levko.The three-story building in Pittsfield Township is one of the largest facilities constructed in Washtenaw County in recent years. Its atrium is its centerpiece, climbing 15 feet above the rest of the building, rising straight to the roofline and then angling outward at 45 degrees. At night, that creates an eerily bright concentration of light that used to surprise surrounding residents when the building first went up. Two-thirds of the building has a two-and-a-half-inch raised floor system manufactured by SMED Corporation. This state-of-the-art product houses electrical components, data cabling, and phone lines, allowing easy reconfiguration of offices and cubes as well as telecommunication connections, Levko said. The building’s construction was also a testament to the experience and precise efficiency of the staff. A year before construction started and months before winning the bid, J.S. Vig came up with a price tag that was within 1% of the building’s budget. “J.S.Vig’s ability to accurately estimate the project cost at the conceptual design stage and then deliver the building below budget and on schedule, was the key in making this deal in a soft real estate market,” said Trish Kalmbach, Avis Farms President. The staff worked to complete the building in just 15 months, rolling smoothly from one wing to the next. It was there that they resolved the systems of expansion joints to allow the wings to freely shift and settle. |
