To meet the educational needs of workers seeking to sharpen their professional skills, Everest Institute is opening a new location in Southfield.

The location at 21107 Lasher, north of Eight Mile, will replace its Civic Center and Evergreen location.

The new site, a 46,000-square-foot building in Central Business Park's west campus, is to be completed by July 31.

"And not one day past July 31," said Valerie Vig, COO of J.S. Vig, which is doing the $2.6 million build-out for Everest.

The location will house Everest's physical therapy, nursing, dental and massage therapy classes, said Lynette Boyle, property manager for PRS Equities, which owns the office park.

The building where Everest is locating has been vacant since it was constructed in 2001. Everest's project has breathed life into the 900,000-square-foot business park, bringing its occupancy to 78 percent. That rate is lower than its peak of 90 percent, Boyle said.

"Still, 78 percent isn't too bad in this economy," Boyle said.

The build-out is on a tight deadline, as the school is rapidly expanding, Vig said. The school's Southfield campus is now housed in 36,000 square feet, and that space is in a multitenant building, spread out over three floors, she added.

"The building they're in now was constructed in 1968, and it's a little obsolete," Boyle said. The new building will be able to accommodate all Everest's functions on one floor, and it will offer technical features required for the dental school.

"In particular, they needed lead-lined walls because of the X-ray machines," Vig said. Everest also needed additional lines for air and gases, and for the pressurized water lines.

The project began April 1. J.S. Vig was able to save time by starting with ductwork and electrical work overhead.

"Typically we'd start underground, but there was so much overhead work to do that we started that while we waited for our permits to start the plumbing work underground," Vig said. "That saved a lot of time, being able to start on that while we were waiting."

The rest of the building will house classrooms and laboratories, and 19 administrative offices organized in three areas: medical, dental and administration.

"This school is very focused on training and retraining workers. They're so busy that they have classes every night until 11 p.m. and on weekends," Boyle said. "They're very medically focused, so this school is doing well."
